I had read so many rave reviews of this place.  Capital Café was supposed to have one of the best breakfast sets in Hong Kong, along with fantastic service.  They use Hokkaido milk for their scrambled eggs, which makes them creamier and silkier than normal scrambled eggs.  They also have an upgraded black truffles scrambled egg option at an additional cost, if that is what you prefer.

When I sat down to order, my expectations were high, but when the food came, it just wasn’t really to my liking.  The eggs were creamy and smooth, but I prefer my eggs to be more well done, so it just wasn’t what I was after.

The breakfast set consisted of macaroni with ham, toast, scrambled or fried eggs and a drink and costs $38HKD.  It is served between 7:00am and 12:00pm.  There is also a second location on  Hong Kong Island.

Unfortunately I didn’t get to try the congee at Hoi Keng, but I went for the next best thing.  I knew that both their congee and their rice rolls were top notch, so I set off to try their BBQ pork and corn rice rolls.  The rice rolls were thin and smooth and the amount of filling was just perfect.  Coupled with a glass of cold soy bean milk, this was the perfect breakfast choice.

Kam Wah Café is pretty famous for their milk tea, pineapple buns and French toast.  I had tried their milk tea and beef chow fun a couple of years ago and remembered both to be very delicious.  At the time, I didn’t realize that their pineapple buns and French toast were well known, so this time around I went back specifically to try their peanut French toast.

Hong Kong style French toast is not the same as what we’re used to in the West.  Hong Kong style French toast is battered and then deep fried and served with butter.  In this case, they included a layer of their peanut sauce in the middle as well.  I can’t say that this was my favourite thing I ate in Hong Kong, but as a quick afternoon snack, it was suitable.  However, I think I’d likely stick with their pineapple buns from now on.

On my last day in Hong Kong, I woke up super early and ventured out to look for some breakfast.  I came across Tsui Wah, which I knew was famous for Malaysia beef curry.  Unfortunately, they don’t start serving that dish until lunch time, and the only choices I had that early in the day were from their set breakfast menu.  I ended up choosing a beef satay ramen noodles, which also came with scrambled eggs and their signature crispy bun.  At least I got to try their crispy bun!  It was a typical delicious Hong Kong breakfast.

Café de Coral is a popular fast food chain in Hong Kong and I ended up eating here twice on my trip.

The afternoon tea culture is quite strong in Hong Kong, and it’s very common for restaurants to offer a discounted menu between 2:00pm and 5:00pm daily.  The portions are smaller but the set meals usually still come with a drink.  On my first day, I tried the duck with vermicelli noodles, which was pretty good.  If I could choose, I’d replace the vermicelli with egg noodles, but usually they don’t allow for substitutions with the afternoon tea menus.

The next day, I had a lunch of chicken corn over rice.  This is actually one of my favourite Cantonese dishes and I was glad I got to fit this in before I left Hong Kong. Don’t let the soupiness fool you.  The chicken and vegetables are actually in a thick cream sauce that you pour over the rice.  It was absolutely delicious!
