A Quick Tour of Eastern Tasmania – Day 3

Day 3 started with a visit to the Bicheno Blow Hole, which is where we were the night before for the fairy penguins.  It looked completely different in day light and we were lucky enough to catch the blow hole in action.

Shortly after, we visited the East Coast Nature World where I got to see many animals roam freely, as well as see a kangaroo and a Tasmanian devil for the first time.

I also saw a white peacock and a baby orphaned wombat for the first time.

Because many of the animals were roaming around freely, we were almost caught up in a wild goose chase a couple of times.  We were just standing around looking at some animals where these geese would run around behind us.

We also saw some colourful ducks and birds before leaving the site.

After lunch, we kept heading north and eventually reached an oyster farm near Binalong Bay.  We made a brief stop to learn about the oyster farming process and to try some fresh oysters.  Although I’m not a huge fan of oysters normally, these were big and fresh and I quite enjoyed them.

We continued onto the Bay of Fires, which is one of my favourite spots in Tasmania, as the views were just breathtaking.

After the Bay of Fires, we headed to Pyengana Dairy, for some cheese sampling and to learn about the robotic milking system for their cows.  This was super interesting, as the cows are trained to line up and milk whenever they want to, which creates less pressure for them.  Once the cows are finished being milked, they are given feed, so they know to come back.  The system is also smart enough to know how many times a cow has been milked that day, and will not allow a cow to be milked once it has reached the limit.  It was amazing to see the cows lining up to do this.

Our last stop of the day was at a park where the Legerwood Carved Memorial Trees are located.  We stopped and had some tea here while enjoying the great artwork on display.

Another hour and a half and we reached Lauceston, our final destination for the day.  It was interesting to see that the second largest city in Tasmania didn’t seem that much smaller than Hobart.  The city had more of a colonial feel to it, perhaps because of all the beautiful buildings.  I really enjoyed the vibe of the city.
