A Tour to See The Taal Volcano

We booked a very last minute trip to the Philippines for the holidays and we knew that we would be in Manila and Boracay, but we wanted to take a couple of day trips out to the less touristy places as well.

My friend found a Taal Volcano tour online that looked to be exactly what we were looking for when we learned that the Taal Volcano is the smallest active volcano in the world.  We were picked up at our hotel in Manila and driven almost two hours to a little town called Tagaytay, which was very pretty and green.  From there, we hopped onto a small little boat where every single person got drenched from head to toe.

Once we arrive onto Taal Volcano Island, we saw a huge line up of people and found out that they were all waiting to rent horses to ride up to the crater.  We decided to do the same, as the other option would have been a long trek up and down the volcano.  However, one of my friends was actually wearing a sundress, so she wasn’t sure if she could ride a horse, but it turns out they rent pants too!  So she was able to borrow a small pair of shorts to wear when riding the horse.

You do not need to know how to ride a horse as each horse comes with a guide.  The guide sits on the horse behind you and is responsible for guiding the horse in the right direction.  It was my first time on a horse and I cannot say that I liked it one bit.  The whole ride was bouncy and uncomfortable and I was very happy to finally reach the top.

As expected, some pretty amazing views were waiting for us at the top.

It was quite windy when we were at the top, but this continued as we made our way back down to the bottom of the volcano.  The dreaded boat ride in which we (again) got drenched from head to toe was unavoidable but we were expecting it this time, so we accepted it better.

Once we crossed back to the main land, we headed to Tagaytay where we were able to purchase some food and shop for some souvenirs if needed.   The views from town were also quite nice.

The tour itself actually didn’t last that long, but it was an extremely long day as the ride back to Manila was brutal.  What should have taken an hour and a half ended up taking almost 3 times longer.  We were due back at the hotel around 5:00pm but we didn’t actually get back until around 8:00pm.  There was so much traffic but what made it even worse was just how hectic and chaotic it was.  People were driving in all directions with no regard to lanes and were literally crisscrossing each other.  I’m still not sure how anyone didn’t get hurt.
