Perhaps one of the most well-known tourist places in Guangzhou, I had passed by the Chen Clan Academy a number of times before finally deciding to pay the 10RMB entrance fee to visit this place.
The Chen Clan Academy consists of the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (陳家祠) and then Guangdong Folk Art Museum. (廣東民間工藝博物館) and was built before the 1900s as an accommodation and study base for the scholars preparing for the imperial exams.
The entrance is a very short walk from the exit of the subway station of the same name. Once inside, it is as if you’ve walked into a scene from a Chinese movie set in the 1800s. The furnishings and architecture is consistent with that of ancient China and the artwork displayed also made me feel like I had stepped back in time.
Many of the doors and dividers were decorated with glass artwork.
Chen Clan Academy was first built as a temple, so there was definitely proof of this as well.
The place wasn’t overly busy the day I visited, although I was there on a Wednesday afternoon. If you have some time to kill while in Guangzhou, I would definitely recommend a visit to the Chen Clan Academy for some culture and history.
