Amsterdam Cheese Museum

Located pretty much across the canal from the Anne Frank Museum, the Amsterdam Cheese Museum was a great little place to visit if you have 30 minutes to kill.  I had heard about this place while I was on my canal cruise and knew that I definitely had to visit it before I left Amsterdam.

Upon entering, I saw more cheese in there than I’d ever seen before and realized it was more of a store selling cheese, than an actual museum.  With the amount of cheese around, I was expecting strong, potent smells but in reality, there was just a subtle hint of a cheese smell within the store.

You enter the store at the upper level, which consisted of many different varieties of cheese. You are welcome to sample as many different kinds as you’d like.  By far, my favourite were the pesto cheeses.  It was nothing like I had ever tasted before.

After wandering around on the upper level and sampling all the cheese, I made my way towards the stairs that led to the basement.  The stairs were so narrow and steep, that I really wondered how they were able to get everything down to the basement.  The basement was where the museum was, and the area was dedicated to displaying the history of cheese and even had clothes you could dress up in for pictures.

The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming.  The Cheese Museum also ships their product worldwide, so if you run out of your favourites, you could easily place an order online.
