We were wanting to meet up with a friend of ours from home, who had been living in Japan for the past few years and we decided to meet at Arashiyama (嵐山), solely because none of us had been there before, and it was one of Kyoto’s premier attractions.
It is located on the western side of Kyoto and is popular due to the scenery it provides. I had heard that the area has been popular even centuries ago with Japanese nobles – the serene beauty of the place definitely makes its popularity understandable.
Central Arashiyama is home to the Togetsukyo Bridge, along with many shops and restaurants. It is also in this area where you will find the Bamboo Groves, a huge collection of bamboo trees that seem to go on for miles and miles.
