A few days earlier, I had climbed several bell towers and when I arrived into Venice, I thought I’d do the same. There was a short line that extended out into St. Mark’s Square and the entire time I was lined up outside, I had no idea if it was actually the correct line for the Campanile. The signs didn’t appear until you entered the building, and I had to line up for about 25 minutes before I reached that point. Once I entered the building, there was a man collecting payment and I was surprised to see a small elevator, which was to take you up to the top of the bell tower.
Upon arrival at the top of the bell tower, it was the first time I felt cold on my entire trip. It was almost like a foreshadow of what was to come, as it only got colder and colder after this.
As expected, the bell tower offered fantastic views of Venice.
Once I made my way back down to St. Mark’s Square, I saw the long line in front of the Cathedral and decided to skip it. The cathedral was actually also under renovations when I was there.
