I had heard that Black Star is really famous for one of their cakes in particular – the Strawberry Watermelon Cake. This was very intriguing to me as watermelon is rarely used in pastries so I was really excited to see what this would be like.
The location that I visited is inside a bookstore and as soon as I found the entrance, I knew that this tiny little shop must be super popular as they had those retractable belt barriers set up so that people could line up accordingly. As with many bakeries, they had their display case lined with different cakes and desserts. However, it was very obvious that the star of the shop is the Strawberry Watermelon cake, as 75% of the display case was filled with this product.
At $9AUD per slice, the cake is not cheap. It is light, fluffy and not overly sweet, and the strawberry and watermelon work well together to offer a refreshing taste. It actually reminded me of Chinese cakes, which are often filled with fruit and are much lighter than Western style cakes.
Although I enjoyed the cake very much, it wasn’t as amazing as I had hoped for. And at $9AUD, it’s difficult to say that it was truly worth it.
