I had heard that Los Angeles was founded in the 1700s and Olvera Street was LA’s very first street. As LA was being ruled by Mexico at that time, Olvera Street was heavily influenced and to this day, it still maintains a great deal of Mexican culture and colours.
We decided to take a stroll from Chinatown to Little Tokyo, via Olvera Street and were pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere of Olvera Street. It is just a short distance from Chinatown but you definitely feel like you are in a different world. In fact, with all of the Mexican sights and sounds, you could easily convince yourself that you are in Mexico.
The street was lined with vendors selling colourful Mexican souvenirs and trinkets. Restaurants and snack stalls are also in abundance here. It does have a bit of a “tourist trap” feel to it, but regardless, the preservation of the street and the ability to display Mexican culture far outweighs the tourist trap feeling.
