My itinerary required that I fly from Guangzhou to Fukuoka with a connection in Seoul (Incheon). I was more than happy to make this connection as it would be the first time I’d be back on Korean soil since leaving there in the fall of 2009.
It’s funny because when it was time for me to leave in 2009, I was sick and tired of the cultural differences and was eager to leave. Not even 3 years later, I found myself growing incredibly giddy and excited at the thought of being able to be back on Korean soil.
I was arriving after a red eye flight and would have a couple of hours at the Incheon airport before my flight to Fukuoka. It was just after 6:00am when I arrived, so the airport was pretty quiet and calm. Incheon has always been one of my favourite airports – it’s clean, bright and spacious – everything a large international city’s airport should be like.
I had already formulated a plan to try and eat some black bean noodles for breakfast but in reality, I didn’t expect to be fed a meal on my red eye flight and when I arrived into Korea, I was too full from the meal to eat again. I still ended up walking around the food courts and taking some pictures of the plastic food moulds.
I remember these Korean water coolers!
I opted for a coffee instead and paid a visit to the Starbucks near my gate.
Another memory of Korea are these “etiquette buttons”. It’s a cute concept of trying to help hide someone’s embarrassment. You press the etiquette button if you feel that you will be making noise and that way, the other people in the bathroom don’t hear it (although the awkward music still lets everyone know what you are doing)!
I’ve been missing Korea so much and these few hours I got to spend at Incheon really helped remind me that I did have a great year here in 2009.
