China is known for having all sorts of distinctive foods in all corners of the country. From the numbing spiciness of foods from the Sichuan region to the delicate Beijing duck of the capital, the country is full of specialty regional foods. Having known absolutely nothing about Fujian province before traveling to Xiamen, I was excited to discover what regional specialties I would be able to find there.
Well, in the 3 days that we visited Xiamen, I think we spent more time at coffee shops than we did at restaurants. This isn’t to say that we didn’t try very hard to look for Xiamen foods. We walked up and down Zhongshan Road, the famous pedestrian street known for shopping and food, numerous times in our 3 days in the city and we were still unable to find any local regional specialties.
When we asked the locals for places to try, they pointed us to chain restaurants that we also had in Guangdong and it really left us wondering if Fujian might be the only province with no regional specialties! This made no sense at all especially when you consider the fact that Fujian cuisine has a place in China’s 8 Great Regional Cuisines.
Xiamen was wonderful and had more blue skies than any other city I’d been to in China. But where is all the local food?
