We had pre-purchased ferry tickets from the official Alcatraz vendor prior to our trip to ensure that we would be able to explore Alcatraz first thing in the morning. There are no food services on the island so make sure to eat prior to getting on the boat. There is one cafe (Alcatraz Cafe) at the pier but not much else. It was a busy place first thing in the morning, with everyone trying to get some breakfast in before the ferry over to the island.
We boarded a 9:10am ferry and when we arrived, we were greeted by some staff members who provided the crowd with some information about the island. After the debrief, we were free to explore the island at our own pace. The prison is located up a hill, so be prepared to make the steep climb.
I didn’t bother taking too many pictures of the inside of the prison, as you can imagine how depressing it was. We were able to explore the dining area, the cells and even the library.
It was interesting to read about some of the stories there, but as with all the other prisons I’ve been to before, it was quite depressing and we really didn’t want to stay too long. Right before the exit, there was a room filled with signs like these:
As one of American’s most notorious prisons, it is definitely worth visiting. Unfortunately, the ferry ride over to the island is a steep $30.00USD.
