I had always wanted to try chicken fried steak, and seeing as Texas is one of the places that claim the dish originated there, I decided to try it when I was in San Antonio. We headed out to Lulu’s Café on a very rainy night and likely because of that reason, the restaurant wasn’t that busy.
There was a whole page on the menu dedicated to Chicken Fried Steak.
We decided to go for the Deputy Special and just ordered 2 additional sides to share as the meal looked to be large enough for 2 people. We were correct and in the end, even the 2 additional sides weren’t really necessary.
It was huge! But I think more than half of it was just breading that didn’t have any meat inside, so if you remove all of the extra breading, the steak was actually not that big. The sides were delicious and to my surprise, the bun was one of the best parts of the meal. It was really sweet and paired perfectly with the cream gravy.
When you mention Lulu’s Café to anyone in San Antonio, they will likely ask you about the cinnamon roll. Lulu’s Café is famous for having a 3lbs cinnamon roll and if you don’t have at least 8-10 people with you, I would advise against ordering it! Of course, you can purchase it to take back home if you’d like, as I’ve heard they freeze quite well. Since there were only 2 of us, we didn’t get a chance to try this, but they did let us take a picture!
