First Whataburger Experience

By the time we arrived at our hotel, it was well after midnight but this didn’t stop us from going out to look for a Whataburger, the king of burger chains in Texas.  Thankfully we didn’t have to travel far, as there was one within a few minutes of our hotel.  We had done some research online and decided to order the #1, 2 and 3 items according to many consumer reviews.  We tried the Honey BBQ Chicken Strips Sandwich, the Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit, the Original Whataburger, along with some fries and their signature spicy ketchup.

First off, I guess things really are bigger in Texas.  We asked for small drinks and what we received would be called extra-large at home!

My main focus was the Honey BBQ Chicken Strip Sandwich and upon ordering they actually asked if I wanted it on bread or a bun.  There was a little bit of confusion here though as the exact words the guy behind the counter asked us was “Did you want that on Texas toast or regular?”  In all of the pictures around the store, the sandwich was always served with a thick slice of bread, so I thought he was asking if I wanted it on Texas toast or regular (thin) toast.  Thankfully, his colleague overheard and clarified that “regular” meant a bun.  The sandwich was exactly what I was expecting – deep fried chicken strips lathered in BBQ sauce, squished between some cheese and two slices of thick Texas toast.  Perhaps a tad generous on the BBQ sauce, but otherwise extremely delicious and fulfilling.

Next, it was on to the Original Whataburger.  Again, when in Texas, expect even fast food portion size to be humungous, as the burger required both hands to hold up.  The original had a bit of everything and the taste reminded me of the old fashioned Harvey burgers I ate growing up.

Lastly, it was time to move on to my most anticipated item.  I had heard so much about the Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit and it did not disappoint.  Imagine taking a deep fried chicken strip, drenching it in a creamy, buttery sauce and then inserting it into the middle of an equally buttery and crumbly biscuit.  The sauce was definitely what made the biscuit as the combination of honey and butter made it impossible for the biscuit to not just melt in your mouth.  To be honest, I didn’t even find the chicken to be necessary.  The biscuit and the sauce was more than enough to make the biscuit special.

We did order some fries as well and it turned out that the only purpose of the fries was to try out the spicy ketchup that Whataburger is famous for.  Normally, I am a fries fanatic and don’t really like spicy food.  However, the fries at Whataburger were very mediocre and the spicy ketchup turned out to be the star. It really wasn’t spicy at all and had more of a sweetness to it than spiciness.

Our late night Whataburger venture was a huge success and it’s a good thing Texas has so much good food to offer.  Otherwise we would have come back a few more times!
