We took a morning train from Guangzhou to Changsha South Station and was immediately greeted with a chilling wind when we stepped onto the platform of the station. We were only one province north of Guangdong but it was so much colder than Guangzhou.
Our first stop was Martyr’s Park. It was a cold, rainy day, but there were still a few tourists hanging around the park. It was nice, clean and quite peaceful.
Unfortunately, due to the rain, we just didn’t feel up to hanging around the park for too long. We quickly made our way downtown towards Wuyi Square (五一步行街 ) . This definitely looked to be the heart of Changsha as the street was filled with cars, lights, restaurants, shopping and cafes. Being in Changsha, we knew that we had to try the famous Changsha style Stinky Tofu (臭豆腐). We found a booth selling it on the streets and purchased one portion along with some sweet potato balls and took it up to a restaurant where we were going to have dinner.
The place we chose for dinner was a typical restaurant serving Hunanese cuisine. It was almost like a buffet in which they give you a huge bowl and you go around and pick all the items you want and then hand the bowl back to them. They then stir fry it for you by adding spicy peppers, seasoning and sauce. It was the first time I’d tried this and it turned out to be quite delicious. The only problem is that we were in Hunan, so everything is spicy as heck. Thankfully I had a couple bottles of tea with me, or else I don’t think I would have made it!
After supper, it was time to head back to the train station to catch our overnight train to Jishou. We would be back in Changsha the following week.
