For 2 nights, I stayed at the Holiday Inn Salzburg City. The hotel offered quite an economic rate during my time in Salzburg and was located close enough to the train station that it would be easily reachable with a short walk.
From the main train station, it is approximately a 15 minute walk to the hotel. If you’d rather take a bus, the hotel had previously advised me that the #2 bus is available from the station.
At check in, I found the service to be sub-par. The gentleman who checked me in asked for my name and then handed over the room key and a map of the area and then left the desk to go into a back room before I could ask him any questions. I waited until he came back to ask a few questions about the area, but he didn’t seem overly pleased to have to answer my questions.
He also told me that I could catch bus #2 from the bus stop just down the street to get downtown, which wasn’t true. Thank goodness there was a transit map at the bus stop which was more helpful than the front desk. Even though I was asking about the buses, he didn’t offer information about the Salzburg City Card and it was a good thing I had read about it previously. Otherwise I wouldn’t have known to ask for it.
I had booked a standard room, but I think I was upgraded as my room was in an enclosed area on the main level and there were only 6 of these rooms available. These rooms all had floor to ceiling windows with a sliding door that brought you directly outside. The room was very nice and the bathroom was big and clean. It even had a bathtub. Although I was on a non-smoking floor, the hall and room still smelled a bit like a smoking room.
The hotel also had a restaurant that served a buffet breakfast, as well as lunch and dinner late into the night. There’s a supermarket just down the street but it closes at 7:50pm. The area surrounding the hotel is very quiet and didn’t feel very touristy at all. The #2 bus is located about a 2-3 minute walk from the hotel and from there, you can easily take the bus two stops to the Mirabell Palace, before switching buses for another two stops to go downtown. In total, even with the waiting time, it never took me more than 15-20 minutes to reach downtown by bus.
The Holiday Inn Salzburg City is a valid choice for those looking for a quieter hotel. Although the location is not as central as some other hotels, the amenities, the conveniences and the proximity to the train station outweighed the need to be in the city centre.
