We enjoyed out 4 night stay at Taipei’s Shin Shih Hotel very much. The hotel is situated about 2 minutes from Shuangliang MRT station, which is only 2 stops away from Taipei Main Station. It is across from a hospital and on the first night, we did hear a siren go off in the middle of the night, as our room directly faced the main entrance of the hospital. We didn’t have any issues the rest of the time we were there. The only major tourist sight that is within walking distance is the Ningxia Night Market (about a 20 minute walk).
The set up of the hotel is a bit strange. When you step through the main entrance of the hotel, you are actually entering the dining area. You have to walk past the dining hall to the back to check in. This isn’t really an issue, unless you had planned to spend a great deal of time in the non existent lobby.
The staff were wonderful. We had a situation where we were supposed to pay in full the night we arrived but when we discussed it with them and advised that we’d like to see the room first, they were lenient about the situation and negotiated that we pay for 2 nights. By the time we came back down the next morning to pay for the final 2 nights, everything was already sorted out for us, even though it was a different staff member from the previous night.
Our room was very big for Asian standards and we had ample room with 2 twin beds, a desk, a couch, and a safe. The bathroom was also larger than expected.
A self service breakfast was also available with our stay. They had cereals and some hot Chinese dishes as well. They also had an expresso machine in the dining area.
