Unlike the night markets in Taipei, Kaohsiung’s night markets are not open every night. Make sure you do your homework beforehand to see which ones are open the nights you’re there.

On our first night in Kaohsiung, we headed to Ruifeng Night Market. I had previously read that this was the busiest and most popular night market in Kaohsiung and I have to agree. It was big, but very organized. There seemed to be 3 distinct sections – the food stalls were on one side, the game stalls were all at the back and then lastly, the sit down food stalls were in another area.
We discovered that Kaohsiung is quite known for their hot pots, so we decided to try this at one of the sit down food stalls. We found this place inside the night market with stone hot pots which was a new experience for me. We ordered the “special” which meant we got one of each item. I’m really glad we ended up doing this as we got to try everything.
One of the most famous Taiwanese street foods is fried chicken and I found this Japanese style chicken stall with a crazy owner who insisted I take a picture of his store when he found out that I was from Canada. This was one of the most delicious things I had in all of Taiwan. They had 8 flavours, but 3 of them were already sold out for the night. I was left to choose between “fish egg mayonnaise”, “miso spicy sauce”, “radish and vinegar sauce”, “Korean kimchi” or “takoyaki sauce”. I decided on takoyaki but I can’t wait to go back and try some of the other ones.
The problem with having a sit down meal at the night market is that you really don’t have room for anything else afterwards. Although there were so many other foods we wanted to try, we were just too stuffed from our dinner.
六合夜市 Liuhe Night Market
Address in Chinese: 高雄市新興區六合二路
Address in English: Liuhe 2nd Rd, Xinxing District, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan
Getting There: MRT Red Line to R8/Exit at Liuhe Street
Apparently, Liuhe Night Market used to be the place to be back in the day. Nowadays, it’s become much quieter and appears to have been overtaken by Ruifeng Night Market in popularity. Liuhe is known for seafood but unfortunately, we weren’t able to fit this into our short time in Kaohsiung.
Our hotel is located on the main street where the night market is held, so upon arriving back to the area on our last night in town, we found that the famous Papaya Milk Stand was still open. This is perhaps the most famous night market stall in all of Kaohsiung and the sign for the stall is cluttered with an array of autographs of the rich and famous that have frequented this place. So needless to say, expectations were high!
Unfortunately, the verdict is that it is way too sweet for the both of us. We actually ended up throwing most of it away. Perhaps if I had bought it in the morning it might have been better, but drinking this at 1:00am at night just didn’t work for us.
