I saved one of my most anticipated meals for last and made my way to Yayoi around 8pm on my last night in Sydney. There are multiple locations of this teishoku restaurant in Sydney. Teishoku is a Japanese set meal, where all of the dishes in the meal are served together in a set.
Each table has an electronic ordering system where you scroll through and choose everything that you want, including water! Normally, I love this as you can see pictures of all the menu items before ordering, but I actually found Yayoi’s menu to be quite confusing.
The Sukiyaki Teishoku page showed menu items at the bottom with prices. Therefore, I had interpreted this to mean that the $27.80 only included the basic sukiyaki dish and you would have to pay the additional costs to get the other items. The most confusing part was the rice, as it showed that it was sold out, but yet, it allowed me to select it on another page.
When the meal finally arrived, it came with 2 bowls of rice and you can imagine my surprise. I asked the server about this and he explained that I had ordered an extra bowl of rice. Thankfully, he was nice enough to remove the second bowl of rice from my order.
The suspense was killing me and I finally asked one of the servers about the menu and why my set came with soup and 2 bowls of rice when I hadn’t selected either of those things. Turns out that the set meal originally comes with miso soup, rice and an egg, but the soup and rice that are listed at the bottom of the menu are upgrades to their normal miso soup and rice. Only the sashimi is a true add-on item. The server mentioned that they have had many complaints about how confusing the menu is and suggested that I ask the next time before I ordered. I’m just glad to know that I wasn’t the only one confused by this.
Overall, I really enjoyed the meal and would visit again if I was in Sydney.
