My friend had moved to Shanghai a few months earlier and she decided to take me to Maan Café for brunch to catch up. The moment I stepped through the doors of the café, I felt that it had a very Korean concept to it and sure enough, my friend confirmed that the area we were in was a Korean neighbourhood.
This was one of the cutest cafes I’ve ever been to. The concept is very Asian and I’m not sure that it would necessarily work in North America.
Once you enter into the café, you are presented with the menu and some plastic models of what the food would look like (so typically Asian). Once you place your order, they give you a teddy bear that you’re supposed to take with you to your table. The café is quite large and spans 3 floors, so the teddy bear is how they figure out which table you’ve selected.
Once your food is ready, the waitresses and waiters set out to find the teddy bear associated with the order and once they serve you your food, they take the bear back to the front.
I wouldn’t say that the food and drinks were amazing, but I can definitely see why people would enjoy coming here and spending an afternoon just relaxing and studying or working. The food and drinks were on par with prices at the local Starbucks so it wasn’t very overly expensive to order a coffee and relax there for an afternoon.
Last I heard, Maan Coffee has now expanded into Guangzhou, Shenzhen and a couple of other chinese cities. Good thing it didn’t exist while I was living there. I can’t even begin to imagine how much money I would have spent there!
