Mango Ice Cream at the Menger Hotel

The Menger Hotel is an impressive structure in downtown San Antonio, located very close to the Alamo.  It’s an unassuming hotel, but the moment we walked inside, we were greeted by a police officer that was just sitting in the lobby.  He asked us what we were needing and we told him we were looking for a café and his first question was “There are a ton of cafes in this area, why here?” and we explained that we had read about a famous café that Teddy Roosevelt had frequented because of its mango ice cream.  The police officer immediately brought us over to an old picture that was hanging nearby and proceeded to tell us a story about how much Bill Clinton loved this ice cream as well.

When we finally stepped into the café, we told the hostess that we were here for dessert and she immediately asked if we wanted mango ice cream.  Once we sat down, the waiter asked us the same thing.  Seems like everyone comes here to try the ice cream!

By the point, I was really anticipating it and couldn’t wait to try it!  It arrived in a tall glass with mango sauce drizzled on top and 2 wafers to finish it off.  It was a large portion and we should have ordered one to share, as it was almost too big to finish.

The ice cream had a strong mango taste, so you can tell it was made from fresh mangos.  It wasn’t overly sweet, which was really nice.  For 2 ice creams and a coffee, we ended up spending about $18, which definitely made it a very expensive snack.  For that price, I’m actually not sure it was worth it.  The ice cream was good, but I actually didn’t find it to be fantastic.  Perhaps it’s because I’ve had mango ice cream in Asia before and since fresh fruit ice cream is really done well in Asia, I had a lot of basis for comparison and I just found that this one had a bit of room for improvement.
