I had done an underground tour in Seattle recently and really enjoyed it, so it prompted me to add this to my itinerary, especially after reading great reviews about it.
I had a little bit of a difficult time finding the entrance, and arrived shortly after 10:00am, which was when the tour was supposed to begin. Thankfully, this is one of those times where Italian tardiness helped me out and the tour started a few minutes late.
I learned a lot of interesting things through this tour, including how they are carrying out a bunch of greenhouse experiments underground. There was a large variety of plants involved in this experiment and we saw them all over the underground area.
One of the most memorable experiences is that we had to carry candles to pass through these very narrow tunnels. Before we went into these tunnels, our guide warned that anyone with claustrophobia should wait in the open area until the group comes back and there was actually one girl who chose this option. The tunnels were so narrow and tight, that I had some trouble getting through them while carrying a small backpack. It would have been nice if they had warned us beforehand and we had the option of leaving our bags somewhere else.
Aside from being underground, the tour also included a couple of places in the area that were quite interesting as well. We were led to this house that was built on top of one of the openings to the underground. The entrance to the underground is normally covered by a bed, which is rolled away to open the door when needed. Apparently, the home owners used to store stuff underground all the time.
