I was in Hungary for a total of 2.5 days and from the moment I arrived into the Budapest train station, I was already hooked. Hungarians seemed to speak less English than many of its neighbours but that also contributed to the charm of the country.
I spent some time learning about their obsession with public baths and how the local health care system allows citizens to take advantage of public baths as part of a its recovery regimen. I learned about some of the history, especially as it pertains to World War II and the immense suffrage the Jews had to endure. I learned a little bit about the Matthias Church and got to appreciate the views from the Fisherman’s Bastion. I also got to learn that traditional goulash is quite different from the goulash I had always heard of.
For me, Hungary was distinctly different from the other European countries I’d been to. Even when compared to its neighbours, I found Hungary to be very different. It almost felt like it was that little sibling that is often overlooked, but if given the chance to shine, you realize how much she has to offer.
I had left Hungary for the very end of my trip and I can definitely say that I’ve left one of the best places for last. I loved my time in Budapest and can’t wait to go back to explore some of other parts of Hungary.
