I probably first started paying attention to Macau after watching the popular TVB drama The Return of the Cuckoo (澳門街). Prior to that, my only knowledge of Macau was that it was a Portuguese colony (until 1999), which is infamous for gambling. Oh, and pork chop buns are supposed to be a widely popular snack there. These were probably the only things I really knew about Macau.
My very first visit to Macau was in June of 2010 and it was pouring like crazy when we arrived. Because of the weather, we stayed just long enough for me to know that I needed to go back again on a day with better weather. This opportunity came 4 weeks later on a beautiful late June day.
I figured out that I could take a bus directly to Shekou Ferry Terminal, where they have frequent ferries over to Macau. The ferry terminal was deserted and I was one of only a handful of people to board the ferry to Macau.
Upon arrival, I made my way to Senado Square immediately and was met with a scene that was very familiar, as I had recently watched the Korean version of Boys Over Flowers, which was playing on the TV of this shop.
Perhaps it was because I had visited on a weekday, but even the Ruins of St. Paul’s wasn’t overly packed. I was quite shocked as the weather was beautiful.
I had purchased a return ferry ticket and was quickly regretting this, as I didn’t calculate the time very well and ended up with only a couple of hours in Macau. I didn’t have enough time to visit anywhere other than Senado Square and the church.
Guess I’ll just have to come back again another day!
