Queenstown was the place where we spent the most amount of time in New Zealand, staying for a total of 3 nights. In that time, I got to try a couple of the most popular adventures people come here for.
The Shotover Jet is advertised as the only jet boat experience that operates through the narrow Shotover Canyon. It is absolutely beautiful and I just wish I had had a GoPro or something to capture some of the scenery while I was in the jet.
I was fortunate enough to be able to sit in one of the front row seats, but I think that also meant I got hit with the water more than some of the others. They provide you with a neck warmer but do suggest you bring gloves and a toque if possible. I had gloves, which I found to actually be unnecessary because the handlebars are heated. A toque would have been a better choice, as my hair ended up soaked and knotted.
The 25 minute ride was amazing and I would do it again in a heart beat. Our driver told us that drivers need to practice about 80 hours with a teacher before they are permitted to drive the jets alone. For hours 80-130, the drivers are only permitted to give free rides to friends and family members as additional practice. And it’s not until they complete 130 hours are they allowed to start taking guests.
Although still beautiful, these pictures don’t do any justice of what it looks like from inside the canyon, when you’re in the jet boat. There just isn’t anything like looking up and seeing untouched natural beauty.
As expected, you do need to pay an arm and a leg if you wanted any of the photos or videos they have to offer.
