The Popularity of Torchy’s Tacos

Prior to visiting Austin, I had heard so much about Torchy’s Tacos and how they are a must try when in Texas.  So as soon as we dropped our bags off at the hotel, we made our way over to Torchy’s Tacos to see what the fuss was all about.

We arrived on a Saturday in the mid-afternoon, around 3pm, so there weren’t too many people there and shortly after stepping inside, they were ready to take our order.  We asked for recommendations and the server said that his personal favourite is the Democrat, which consisted of beef barbacoa, avocado, cheese, cilantro and onion.  His second recommendation was the Trailer Park, which had fried chicken and cheese.  We asked for a couple more recommendations and he suggested the Baja Shrimp, which was fried shrimp with cabbage slaw, onions, chilantro and cheese and lastly, the Fried Avocado, a combination of avocados, beans, lettuce and cheese.

3 of our 4 tacos came with corn tortillas which we didn’t expect. In fact, it never occurred to me to ask which type of tortilla it came with.  I later discovered that it was actually written into the menu, but we just hadn’t noticed at time of ordering.  It was too bad, as I much prefer flour tortillas.  The tacos were amazing and I’m glad we got to try a variety of them, but next time I will remember to ask for flour tortillas.
