My very last morning in Melbourne was reserved for Tim Ho Wan, the one star Michelin dim sum restaurant from Hong Kong. I had previously dined at Hawker Chan, which is known as the most affordable Michelin restaurant in the world, but Tim Ho Wan is widely known as the second most affordable Michelin restaurant. I was so excited that I could try two Michelin restaurants within days.
I had never actually tried this place in Hong Kong, and have been wanting to since I found out about it. I arrived shortly after opening and pretty much had the whole place to myself.
Surprisingly, the menu was actually quite limited, but I was mainly there to try the Baked Buns with BBQ Pork, the item that won them their star, so as long as that was available, I was happy.
The Baked Buns with BBQ Pork definitely did not disappoint. I was able to finish all 3 on my own and probably could have ordered three more! They were by far the most delicious thing I had on my entire trip to Melbourne. The slightly crispiness of the outer pastry matched perfectly with the sweetly seasoned BBQ pork on the inside.
The other dish that stood out to me was the Gold Dusted Charcoal Buns. Now, normally, I wouldn’t order two bun dishes together, but the description of these Charcoal Buns was just too enticing. This is actually one of my favourite types of buns, but I had never seen it presented in a charcoal colour (and gold dust) before.
The charcoal buns tasted exactly as the normal versions would, with a pillowy soft bun, wrapped around some salted egg yolk that was waiting to ooze out. It was the perfect comfort food for that moment.
The rest of the dim sum was also very good, but didn’t stand out quite as much as these two items. I thoroughly enjoyed dining at Tim Ho Wan and can’t wait to try the original locations in Hong Kong one day.
