On one of the last weekends of my year long stay in Korea, I decided to visit the Tteok mseum in Insadong. I wasn’t sure what to expect exactly, but was eager to find out. I had grown quite accustomed to tteok, a Korean rice cake, during my year long stay in Korea and even attempted to include tteok in many of my meals that I cooked at home.
I knew that the Koreans were very creative when it came to tteok and they use it in many different ways. I had tried plain tteok, tteokbokki, a popular spicy rice cake streetfood, tteok with meats, grilled tteok, and even sweet tteoks that were eaten as desserts.
The museum was very quiet on the day I visited. It turned out to be just a one room museum consisting of displays against all 4 walls of the many different kinds of colourful tteok that are commonly found in Korea.
Admission costed ₩2500 and I’m not sure it was really worth the time or money. I found out later on that the museum puts on some tteok making classes, which I think would have been much more enjoyable than just walking round and seeing the various displays of tteok.
