War Remnants Museum

Next on our list was the War Remnants Museum.  I was really looking forward to visiting as I have always found war museums to be extremely informative and interesting.  This museum didn’t allow photos inside, with the exception of the front entrance area, so I don’t have many photos from this visit.

Interestingly enough, this was the only time during the whole week where I was reminded that I was in a communist country.  There were a great deal of captions and photos detailing the hatred for certain “enemy” countries and the expression of gratitude for others.

The museum was everything I expected and more.  Regardless of whether all the written descriptions and details are true or not, photos don’t lie and there were numerous photo displays of the wreckage and the aftermath of the war.  It was also the first time I learned about the use of Agent Orange by the US Military.  The strongest memory I have of this museum is definitely reading about the usage of Agent Orange and seeing the pictures of the effects it had on Vietnamese people and the environment.  It’s difficult to wipe the image of some of those handicapped children and military personnel from my mind.

I highly recommend a visit to the War Remnants Museum.  The Vietnam War is such an important part of the country’s history and the museum is a great starting point to learn more about this significant event, even if some of the information may be a bit biased.  It was a big museum and you will learn a lot if you take the time to read through all the captions. The museum also provides benches on each floor for you to rest. No air conditioning, but there are fans everywhere to keep you cool.
