Zermatt reminded me very much of Canmore or Banff, or any other small town in the Canadian Rockies. Zermatt is a very touristy town catering to tourists who want to see the Matterhorn, much like how people visit Banff to see Sulphur Mountain.
It appears that most of the buildings in town are built from dark brown wood, which made it stand out from all of the other little towns I had visited this week. Perhaps because it reminded me of Banff, I immediately felt that the town had a bit of a ski town vibe to it.
I had heard that the best views of the Matterhorn from Zermatt can be found on the bridge near the church. If only the clouds weren’t covering the tip!
A quick walk from the bridge brought me to the Old Village, which consisted of many buildings constructed in an old traditional Zermatt style. Unfortunately there was quite a bit of construction in the area, and they had even dug out one of the more famous fountains that is in the middle of the Old Village.
I had wanted to go up to a view point to watch the sunset on Zermatt, but I had the most difficult time finding out exactly where this view point was located. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be until the next day before I found it. On the plus side, I was offered a great view of the city during the day.
My visit to Zermatt was very short, as the sole purpose was to try and catch a glimpse of the Matterhorn. It is a lovely little town and definitely worth the visit.
